Post-Conflict Environmental Recovery
Untethered Initiative deploys autonomous drone technology to recover abandoned fiber optic cables from post-conflict zones — starting with Ukraine.
The Problem
Modern drone warfare has blanketed Ukrainian fields, forests, and communities with thousands of kilometers of severed, tangled fiber optic cable. Left uncleaned, this debris entangles wildlife, disrupts ecosystems, contaminates soil, and poses hazards to farmers and civilians attempting to rebuild.
Traditional cleanup methods are slow, expensive, and dangerous. The scale of the problem demands a smarter approach.
We built a drone that detects, collects, and clears — so communities can focus on rebuilding, not cleanup.
Our Approach
The Avvolgere drone integrates detection, collection, and cutting into a single autonomous platform — guided by AI-mapped flight paths to systematically clear affected zones with minimal human risk.
A nonprofit dedicated to environmental recovery in post-conflict zones
Who We Are
Untethered Initiative is a nonprofit organization founded on the belief that technology should serve humanity — especially in the places that need it most. We operate at the intersection of environmental recovery, autonomous systems, and post-conflict reconstruction.
The Crisis
Fiber optic cables used to guide drones in conflict zones don't disappear after the fighting ends. They accumulate in fields and forests — woven into the earth, tangled in vegetation, mistaken for nesting material by wildlife. The environmental damage is quiet but pervasive.
Farmers cannot safely work land laced with wire. Children cannot play in affected areas. The road to recovery is blocked not just by rubble, but by this invisible lattice of debris.
Core Values
Every mission we fly restores land to the communities and ecosystems that depend on it. We measure success in hectares recovered and habitats protected.
We work alongside local governments, NGOs, and affected communities. Cleanup decisions are made with, not for, the people who live on this land.
Our technology is purpose-built for this mission. We develop only what's needed to solve this specific problem, safely and transparently.
As a nonprofit, we publish our operational data, funding sources, and mission outcomes. Trust is built through openness.
The window for effective cleanup narrows as debris embeds deeper into the environment. We move with the pace the situation demands.
We are not a political organization. We serve the land and the people. Our drones collect — they never deploy anything designed to harm.
Our Focus
Ukraine represents the most acute concentration of fiber-optic drone warfare debris in the world. We are deploying our first operations here, with the intention of scaling our model to future post-conflict recovery efforts globally.
Our partnerships with Ukrainian environmental organizations and international reconstruction bodies ensure that our operations are coordinated, legal, and genuinely beneficial to those affected.
One drone. Three systems. One purpose.
Italian: "to twist" — as in twisting pasta
The Avvolgere is a purpose-built autonomous drone platform engineered for a single mission: detecting, collecting, and cutting abandoned fiber optic cables in post-conflict environments. Named for the Italian word meaning "to twist" — evoking the winding of pasta — the Avvolgere's core mechanism spirals and winds cable debris into a compact, retrievable spool.
All three primary systems — detection, twisting collection, and cutting — are integrated into one compact airframe. There is no handoff between drones, no ground crew required for each pass. The Avvolgere operates as a complete, self-contained cleanup unit.
Integrated Systems
Every Avvolgere unit combines detection, collection, and severance into a unified system — eliminating the need for multi-vehicle operations and reducing mission complexity.
Onboard sensor array — combining optical, near-infrared, and electromagnetic detection — identifies fiber optic cable signatures on the ground. The system differentiates cable debris from roots, vegetation, and other materials, flagging collection targets in real time and feeding data back to the AI navigation system.
The signature system that gives the Avvolgere its name. A motor-driven rotating collector descends to engage cable, twisting and winding it onto a spool in the manner of pasta on a fork. The mechanism handles tangled, knotted, and partially buried cable without requiring the drone to land, operating on a tethered descent arm.
When cable lengths exceed the collection spool's capacity, or when cable is embedded in terrain requiring severance before removal, the integrated cutting system activates. Precision blades on the collection arm sever cable at defined points, enabling segmented collection across large debris fields without interrupting the mission.
GPS-guided waypoint navigation combined with real-time obstacle avoidance enables fully autonomous flight paths. The Avvolgere can execute pre-planned grid sweeps or dynamic detection-triggered routing without pilot input, operating within defined mission boundaries and returning to base automatically when payload capacity is reached.
The Avvolgere doesn't just fly — it thinks. An onboard and ground-based AI system processes mapped data from prior sorties, satellite imagery, and real-time sensor feeds to construct optimized flight paths for each mission. The system learns the debris distribution patterns of each target area, prioritizing high-density zones and adapting routes dynamically as cable is collected.
This means no two missions are flown the same way. The AI ensures maximum coverage efficiency, minimizes redundant passes, and continuously updates its model of the debris field as operations progress.
